Entrepreneurship in SA gets a boost

South Africa has earned the right to host the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC) in 2017. The bid was awarded to Johannesburg as part of the opening ceremony at GEC 2015 in Milan, Italy on Monday.

This week Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) is being celebrated around the world. It is the largest recognition and celebration of job creators and innovators who take risks and initiative to realise their dreams, drive economic growth and wealth creation.

During one week each November, GEW inspires people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators. These activities, from large-scale competitions and events to intimate networking gatherings, connect participants to potential collaborators, mentors and even investors—introducing them to new possibilities and exciting opportunities.

The initiative was launched by the Kauffman Foundation in 2008 and has grown to a week of sharing and celebration in November of each year in 160 countries. It now boasts 25,000 partner organisations and more than 33,000 activities that directly engage millions of participants every year.

Global Entrepreneurship Week continues to attract and engage high-profile entrepreneurs who are enthusiastic to share their personal experiences and insights. Political leaders at all levels around the world have embraced the initiative looking to fuel the economic engine of high-growth startups in their own countries and communities.

But GEW is more than just an awareness campaign supported by world leaders and celebrity entrepreneurs. It is about unleashing ideas and doing what it takes to bring them to life—spotting opportunities, taking risks, solving problems, being creative, building connections and learning from both failure and success. It is about thinking big and making your mark on the world—doing good while doing well at the same time.
